WHAT | Can you camouflage a ray/skate? Rays/skates blend in with the ocean bottom. Camouflage is their protection from predators. Color to blend in with magazine photo. | Rays and skates, like sharks have a strong sense of smell to find their prey. Using tubes with different fragrances (peppermint, coffee, basil, rosemary, lemon, hand cleaner, vanilla, chocolate) and covering them up or using a blindfold, students describe and guess the smells. | Since most rays, except the manta ray, are bottom dwellers finding their prey in the ocean floor, a game was developed with mirrored glasses so students could see their predators. |
Support for differentiation: (ie visual, auditory, written instructions, peer helper, grouping, modifications for different grades) Students worked in groups for the smelling activity with the parent leading them through the activity. Teacher and parents helped students find the colors they needed to make the ray/skate blend in with the magazine photographs. |
