Giant Pacific Octopus and Giant Squid Adaptations

MATERIALS

  • SLIDE SHOW

  • Paper Plates with a 1 inch circle cut out

  • Plastic Bags

  • Sharpies

  • Food coloring

  • Books about squids and octopuses



ACTIVITIES

  1. ⅞ grade students will share the slideshow with the students

  2. Teacher will talk about the special features of the Giant Pacific Octopus
    • No Bones

    • 3 hearts

    • 8 tentacles/arms

    • Suckers

    • Can change colors

    • Propel themselves by sucking in water and shooting it out.

  3. Students will draw their octopus on a plastic bag with

  4. Then add a cup of water and some food coloring

  5. Try to get their octopus to fit in the “cave” (they can decorate their paper plate to resemble a cave. )

  6. If they want, they can add “bones” to see what would happen if an octopus had bones?

  7. When finished they will label the parts of an octopus in their books.

  8. They can also add to the Giant Collaborative Octopus we’ll be working on adding to the hallway.
