MATERIALS

  • Dark blue/black construction paper (folded into thirds)

  • Oil pastels
ACTIVITIES

  1. Teacher/parent will read from an oceans book.

  2. Teacher/parent will describe adaptations sea animals have made to live in the different ocean zones. Deep Sea Notes on Adaptations

  3. Teacher/parent will illustrate assorted adaptations on chart paper or white board.

  4. Teacher/parent will model 3 part activity.

    • Each student gets a paper and pastels and draws a head ONLY of a sea creature including some adaptations as discussed.

    • Papers are collected by helpers making sure that child’s name is at the bottom of that third.

    • Papers are redistributed to different students who do NOT look at previous head drawing and they draw a middle ONLY of a sea creature including adaptations as discussed, in the middle third of the paper.

    • Papers are collected again making sure that child’s name is at the bottom of that third.

    • Papers are redistributed a last time to different students who do NOT look at the middle and they draw the end of a sea creature including adaptations as discussed, in the last third of the paper.

    • When everyone has finished, papers are collected and the teacher “reveals” fantastic sea creatures.

  5. If time remains, students could write about their sea creatures. *NOTE: they “own” the fish that they drew the head of.
