Learning Objectives/Lesson Goals | Students will : -review what an invertebrate is and learn what some of the deep sea invertebrates are -learn the names and facts about some of deep sea invertebrates (bone-eating worm, dumbo octopus, brittle star, sea angel, vampire squid, giant siphonophore, apple anemone, bloody-belly comb jelly, fragile pink sea urchin, Johnson’s sea cucumber, giant isopod, sea pig, yeti crab, giant squid, midwater jellyfish (colobonema), midwater shrimp) -be able to match a fact with a photo of the deep sea invertebrate that goes with that fact | Students will: -learn what a jellyfish is, it’s body parts and some facts about them (doesn’t have a brain, is not a fish, some sting, lives in all the oceans) -create an art piece based on one of the jellyfish from the deep sea |

MATERIALS | Bingo boards with photos/names of 16 deep sea invertebrates (laminated) Facts cards with one fact for each of the 16 deep sea invertebrates Beans or counters Prizes (sea star gummies, gummy worms, gummy fish) | Jellyfish poster: parts of a jelly Deep water jellyfish photos (laminated) Small condiment cups Sticky eyes Ribbon/yarn beads Clear tape scissors markers/crayons beads |
ACTIVITIES | Each student get a bingo board and some beans or counters Adult tells a fact (or a few) about one of the deep sea creatures Student puts a bean or counter over the creature that matches that fact If they get four in a row they say “bingo” and get a “prize” (gummies) *each student gets a gummy bag in the end whether they won or not | Discuss how jellies are invertebrates. Discuss the features that make them invertebrates. Show the jellyfish poster & the parts of a jelly Show the one short video clip of the newly discovered deep sea crown jellyfish of some of the deep sea jellies and discuss what they look like, where they live in the deep sea, what they eat, what unique features they have, etc…( beaded comb jelly, bloody-belly comb jelly, midwater jelly (Colobonema), giant phantom jelly, atolla jelly, helmet jelly, lemon jelly, red paper lantern jelly,hourglass jelly) Students should choose one jelly that they would like to create. Show students all the available art materials for them to create their specific jelly. While they create, discuss some facts about jellies in general as well as facts about their specific jelly. |
